British Galway sheep breeders had tremendous success at the annual Melton Mowbray Traditional & Native Breeds Show and Sale on 13 & 14 September 2024, where the Galway shearling ram Alcroft Denzel from Miss S Cook, Cambridge was awarded the Alan Muddiman Memorial Trophy for the Champion of Champions, going on to sell for 680gns (£714) to the Willowfield flock of RD & PL Hall, Syston.
After taking the Sheep Interbreed title amongst a 30-strong line up of Breed Champions judged by Clive Richardson, Ulverston, this February 2023-born ram stepped forward to be judged against the winners of the cattle and pig sections to be crowned the overall champion of the day. Alcroft Denzel is sired by the NI-born Quoile River Augustus bred by Penny Hutchinson, and out of Willowfield Tickler bred by RD & PL Hall, the ewe herself a former Breed Champion and sale topper for the Hall family at the same event in 2019.
Further success came for RD & PL Hall as they won the event's annual fleece competition with their homebred Galway fleece, topping off an historic weekend for the breed.
